Savannah Airport (SAV) Overview

Full name: Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport IATA code: SAV Location: 15 miles northwest of the Historic District Airlines: American, Delta, United, Southwest, and several regional carriers Terminal: Single terminal — easy to navigate Ground transportation: Rideshare pickup area, taxi stand, rental car center, and shuttle services are all clearly marked

Transfer Options

Rideshare (Uber / Lyft)

Cost: $25–$40 each way (varies by time of day and demand) Time: 20–30 minutes Best for: Most travelers — convenient, affordable, and no advance booking required

Rideshare is the most popular transfer option for most Savannah visitors. Uber and Lyft both operate at SAV. The pickup area is clearly marked outside the terminal.

Tips:

  • Surge pricing can apply during peak arrival times (Friday evenings, holiday weekends). If the price looks high, wait 10–15 minutes and check again.
  • Have your hotel address ready before you request the ride.
  • The drive takes you through some beautiful Georgia countryside — enjoy it.

Taxi

Cost: $35–$50 each way (flat rate or metered, depending on the company) Time: 20–30 minutes Best for: Travelers who prefer a guaranteed price and do not want to use an app

Taxis are available at the taxi stand outside the terminal. Several local companies operate at SAV. Ask for a flat rate to the Historic District before you get in — most drivers will agree to one.

Airport Shuttle Services

Cost: $15–$25 per person each way (shared shuttle) Time: 30–60 minutes (shared shuttles make multiple stops) Best for: Solo travelers or budget-conscious visitors who do not mind a longer ride

Several shuttle services operate between SAV and downtown Savannah hotels. Shared shuttles are cheaper than rideshares but take longer because they make multiple stops. Book in advance through the shuttle company's website.

Private shuttle: Private shuttles are also available and cost more than shared options but less than a taxi for groups of 3–4.

Rental Car

Cost: $40–$80 per day (plus parking at your hotel) Time: 20–30 minutes to the Historic District Best for: Travelers planning day trips to Tybee Island, Bonaventure Cemetery, or other destinations outside the Historic District

SAV has a rental car center connected to the terminal. All major rental companies are represented. If you plan to make day trips outside the Historic District, a rental car gives you flexibility.

Important note: If you are staying in the Historic District and not planning day trips, a rental car is more hassle than it is worth. Parking in the Historic District is expensive ($20–$45 per night at most hotels), and the city is walkable. Consider renting a car only for the days you plan to drive outside the district.

Hotel Shuttle

Cost: Free (some hotels) Time: 20–30 minutes Best for: Guests at hotels that offer the service

Some Savannah hotels offer complimentary airport shuttles. Check with your hotel when you book — it is not common, but it does exist at some properties.

Public Transportation

Cost: $1.50 per ride (Chatham Area Transit) Time: 60–90 minutes (requires transfers) Best for: Budget travelers with time and patience

Chatham Area Transit (CAT) operates bus service between the airport and downtown Savannah. The route requires a transfer and takes significantly longer than other options. It is the cheapest option but not practical for most visitors with luggage.

Returning to the Airport

The same options apply for the return trip. A few additional tips:

Allow extra time. Traffic on I-16 and US-80 can be unpredictable, especially on weekday mornings. Allow at least 45 minutes for the transfer, plus time for check-in and security.

Book rideshares in advance. During peak departure times (Sunday afternoons, Monday mornings), rideshare wait times can be longer than usual. Consider scheduling your Uber or Lyft in advance.

Check your hotel's checkout time. Most Savannah hotels have a noon checkout. If your flight is in the evening, ask about late checkout or luggage storage.

Savannah Airport Tips

SAV is small and easy to navigate. Unlike major hub airports, SAV is a single-terminal airport that is easy to get through quickly. Security lines are typically short.

Dining options are limited. The airport has a few restaurants and cafes, but options are limited. Eat before you arrive or plan to grab something quickly.

Parking at SAV: If you are driving to the airport, short-term parking runs about $2–$3 per hour; long-term parking runs about $10–$12 per day. The long-term lot is a short shuttle ride from the terminal.
